Composing for Plutonia began in May 2019, and was completed just two months later. Originally commissioned by Raison D’être Dance Project to accompany their performance of the same title in 2020, the project was sadly placed on hold as the world experienced the pandemic. In 2022, the production was finally able to move forward and a new premiere date set.

At sixty minutes in length, there are fifteen songs in total (plus 2 bonus tracks), each one written to help propel the listener on a perilous journey that begins and ends on a ship in outer space. Inspiration was drawn from the story of Plutonia, written by Erin Levy, of two sisters separated and lost amongst the stars. I wanted the music to capture all the emotions of fear, grief, anger, and longing of these two heroines, but also create the strange and immersive world that would surround them. Jagged landscapes and icy skies evolve into saturated beams of light. Spidery creatures impale fiery turf as a ship’s engine hums overhead. Stardust twinkles as silvery beings emerge from violet smoke. The goal was to give every song a unique cinematic presence and emotional purpose. I drew from well-loved musical influences such as Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’ and the many sci-fi scores of film and television (Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Blade Runner, Logan’s Run, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Doctor Who, etc.) with styles ranging from simulated full orchestrations to experimental analog synth sounds. For Plutonia, I crafted the music entirely using an Apple MacBook Pro with LogicPro music software and the Omnisphere plug-in for synth sculpting. It was an honor to be invited to compose for Raison D’être Dance Project, so please join me as we celebrate this exciting journey into space.

The official performances of Plutonia featuring the dancers of Raison D’être Dance Project are taking place in Bozeman, MT, on June 10 and June 11, 2022.
